i'm assuming that your talking about the conductor. they help you keep in time(their hand movements), they pick music suitable for the ability in whichever band your in. i really hope this is what your talking about.

The concert master is the name given in America to the person who is called the leader in Great Britain. In orchestras the concert master/leader is the number one player in the orchestra. Although conductors may change, the concert master/leader stays the same, so he or she represents the orchestra. He or she gets a separate round of applause at the start to represent applause for the conductor. In disputes between the orchestra and the conductor, the concert master/leader has to negotiate. When there are violins, the concert master/leader is the first violin and decides on the bowing pattern for all the violins.

In bands, the conductor usually has more control of every aspect of the music so the concert master/leader has less to do.

In an orchestra, the first violinist is the concert master. In a band, it is usually the first clarinetist.

One of the duties of the concert master is to make sure that the ensemble is tuned and ready to go before the conductor comes on stage.

In addition, the concert master (theoretically) would take over the conducting if the conductor is unavailable.
