Hello everybody.
I have been playing other woodwinds for years and now I am trying to pick up the bassoon. What puzzles me is the use of the register keys for A/B/Bb/C in the middle upper register. According to some fingering charts I have seen they are not needed for the standard fingering. However, according to the Heckel manual, they should by all means be used when playing staccato. The scheme in this site says, on the contrary, they should be flicked when playing legato. Furthermore, should they be kept pressed or just flicked? In my instrument I notice a variation in pitch when I press them.
Can anybody clarify?

The register / flicking keys can be approached in two ways:
1) they may be used like a register key on a clarinet or saxophone and pressed down throughout the duration of the note (though they do alter the pitch somewhat as you said).
2) they may be used as "flicking keys" as the second name suggests -- merely tap the appropriate flicking key just before the start of the note to help it speak, then let go.
I personally prefer and use the second method, as the main problem with the first is intonation. The flicking keys don't *have* to be used; they are merely a tool to help some troublesome notes speak. Of course, in quicker passages, they're impractical other than perhaps for the first note or two.

I have only been playing bassoon for about three and a half years, so I don't have a real definate answer for you, however, I do have some advice. Use a tuner and see which ones you can get in tune the best. Some fingerings just throw the pitch off a little bit, so use the fingering that works the best for you, if you can. As long as you can play the right note(in tune), it doesn't matter if you are using the register keys.

with thous notes you dont have to filic if you can speed up your air. so i think is give it a try and not flick
