 Flute to ...?

In our school's jazz band, there is no flutes allowed, because the flute is not a so-called "jazz" instrument according to our band director. So I was wondering if any one knew what an easy switch would be from flute. A lot of people who play instruments in concert band at my school play a different instrument only for jazz band. I was thinking of maybe doing that, because I would really like to be in jazz band. So is either the alto, tenor, or soprano saxophone an easy switch from flute, because those are the instruments I was thinking of switching too, if i was to join jazz band.

I'm a flute player, and I wanted to be in jazz band too but I had the same problem. I started playing the alto sax, and I really enjoy it. It's fairly easy to learn. Many of the fingerings are quite similar to the flute, allowing you to concentrate on other things like getting used to the reed, etc.

i think the alto is easy too, i have played the flute for quite some time and found that it was very easy to pick up, although i am used to playing on reed instrements such as the clarinet and oboe i found that the alto was easy and could play prety well after about 10 min

Alto sax is the easiest to switch to. Good luck!

I think that it is good that you are considering the sax. I think that it would be better for you because you have to auddition for it ( or at least in my school.) so you would be told if you would be suggsessful playing it.
P.S- sorry if my spelling's a little off, i have problems today!!!

Hi.
I think that it is very unfair that people say that flutes are not a jazz instrument I think that a flute has a beautiful sound and would make a great addition to a jazz band but since your band director does not allow flutes in jazz band (so does mine) I would go for a sax like everyone else says. It would be a pretty easy transition.
