 Ouch my bottom lip!
Author: EmuSqueak

Hi

I have been playing clarinet for 11 years and the sax for 5. I am advanced on both, but find when I am preparing for a recital or if I haven't played for a while (say on holiday or something) then when I play again my bottom lip gets torn to pieces!!!! I usually get 5 cigarette papers (I don't smoke!) and put them over my bottom teeth, which sometimes helps, but today it is not!!!! I am working on the Torke Sax concerto for soprano sax and my lip is all bruises and hurting which makes top G really painful to play. Apart from resting and gentle playing for a week or so, does anyone have any quick remedies?

Em

There's this stuff that kinda looks like chewing gum, it's actually a type of hard wax though, it'll take that edge off your teeth and let your lip heal up. Just about anything will work though as long as it protects your lip and doesn't interfere with your playing.

I think your embouchure (misspelled?) might be wrong (no offense)...I assume you use your teeth to tighten up on the reed for higher notes, by pressing your lower lip against the reed...well, you are only supposed to use lip muscle, which should remove your teeth from the embouchure equation...but what do I know...I have never had that problem before...and I have gone three months without playing before...I think you are only supposed to use your teeth for support and control...

I am not even sure what I am talking about...
