 C melody reeds
Author: Wade

What kind of reed do I use for a c-melody sax? I can't find anyone who knows anything about them at stores. My grandfather has 3 of them but no reeds and i want to play one. Any Ideas?

oh I was also thinking. Maybe I could get tenor reeds and shave them down to size. Does anyone know how this will affect the sound?

Tenor reeds (or bass clarinet reeds, which i haven't actually tried but might work anyway) should work fine by themselves, i wouldn't recommend shaving unless you know exactly what you are doing. I've played a C Melody with tenor reeds and it worked great.

To whom:
I certainly am not a professional, and I would also like
to know. It's a problem of supply and demand. I have
been playing a Conn off & on since 1936 when my old
metal clarinet needed fixing and it couldn't be repaired.
The music store man sold me this horn for 25 bucks and
I proceeded on with it. I purchased Rico Plasticover as
long as they could special order them. I think the last
was about 1946.

I,and others that play a C Melody, which is a tenor horn
use B flat reeds. I have learned to tickle them to get
good tone and range but would like to buy the C reeds
again.
Hope this helps some, Glen
