 Clarinet to Baritone Sax
Author: Stephanie

I'm a third year clarinet player, and I'm going to play the baritone saxophone in the jazz band in September. My conductor says that I'll be able to pick it up in about a week, but I'm just wondering: How different are the fingerings? Is that why he says I can pick it up in a week is because the fingerings are similar?

stephanie the fingering for a sax is for the left(top) hand:
1st finger(index)=b add
2nd finger(Middl)=a add 2nd finger
3rd finger(ringf)=g add only=c
for the right(bottom)hand:
1st finger(index)=f add
2nd finger(middl)=e add
3rd finger(ringf)=d add
4th finger(pinky skip one)=c
these basic fingerings are reversed for the clarinet-for example dont you finger the g with the 3 left and 3 right fingers down
basically think in terms of just your hands are reversed in playing most notes with the sax
all saxes have the same fingerings regardless if it is a b flat or an
e flat horn

The conductor is saying you should pick it up quickly because the fingerings for saxophones and clarinets are similars. The fingerings for the sax (in both registers) are the same as the upper register of the clarinet. Even some of the pinkey keys are similar, like the low C and Eb on the right hand, and G#, B and C# on the left hand. I play the clarinet, and have been trying on my brother's sax. A lot of the fingers are close, and it isn't hard to learn.

Stephanie,
I've been playing both instruments for almost 20 years. The fingerings on the sax (especially the bari, since you won't be playing the higher registers) are almost identical to the clarinet's mid-register (C on the staff to B one ledger line above).
The hardest thing will be your embouchure. The Bari has a much larger mouthpiece and it'll take practice going back and forth. Especially from Sax to Clarinet. (This will be especially true if you're going from a Jazz to Classical performance).

I've learned the fingerings over summer vacation and can finger them comfortably, and now I just have to work on getting the right pitch out of it, but thanks for those who have helped. :)
