Alto Saxophone to OBOE or TENOR SAX?
Author: Kim M.

I have been playing the alto saxophone for one year in school, and next year I may have to switch, because the band I am joining already has 3 alto saxophone players. Would it be easier for me to switch to playing oboe, or tenor sax? Why? The band I am joining has only 1 tenor, and there is no oboe. Please let me know.

THANK YOU!

Personally I think tenor sax would be your best bet, because you alreay have saxophone experience, so it would be easy to pick up.

In reply to your question, it would be much much easier to switch to tenor sax. Other than playing in a different key signature(flats rather than sharps),the fingerings are all exactly the same. If you want to switch to oboe go ahead but you will have to learn a whole new set of fingerings, adjust to playing on a double reed, and learn how to roll your finger for notes such as D and Eb.Hope i was of help.

i would go for tenor i play oboe along with tenor and alto sax and oboe is the hardest it is hard to control the sound and also hard to tune plus there is a lot more resiestance in a double reed then in a mouthpiece with a regular reed

I deffinitly think you should go for the Tenor Sax because I have a friend who switched from alto to tenor and he thought it was about the same.
