What instruments are required for the Reed 3 book (with oboe)? Is clarinet necessary?

Played MILLIE summer of 2008. Musically, this is one of my favorites of the 22 shows I have done. If you are going to use Reed 3, the clarinet is probably the most important of the reed 3 book. I was one of 2 reed players that covered the 4 reed books. Would have been nice to have a 3rd but we survived. The other reed player played the oboe solo on THE SPEED TEST on soprano which is the only exposed part for the oboe. Unless you are a REALLY good oboist, the soprano is a very good substitute.

Thanks for the reply. This site is so informative. Actually I wrote on behalf of my daughter who is 14 and has been asked by the high school to play a reed part in this musical. It will be her first one. Her main instruments are oboe/EH and alto/soprano sax. I don't know if she is "really" good yet on any instrument, but she can play the Mozart oboe concerto and from listening to the CD, the oboe part doesn't sound too difficult for her. She should be comfortable enough on the soprano and tenor sax parts too I think as she has considerable jazz band and solo experience already. Her concern is the clarinet part as she hasn't been playing it. She can play it and we have one (borrowed), but I was wondering how difficult the clarinet part is. I am assuming there aren't any clarinet solos in the Reed 3 part. Is it possible to play the soprano sax instead of the clarinet in some sections?
And there will be four windwood players in the musical.

No clarinet solos (they are in Reed 2), and if she does play clarinet at all, this will be a good excuse to get it out again. Some tricky rhythms (definitely not Mozart). It's a fun show.

She got the music yesterday. This will certainly be a challenge for her. You pros probably never do this , being clarinet players, but I was wondering if she could play some of the higher clarinet parts on the soprano sax. Her lower register on clarinet is fine but the upper would take some work to sound very good. I figure it will be less of a change to the music than playing clarinet or soprano sax in the oboe parts.

If she plays soprano sax reasonably well, the upper register of the clarinet shouldn't really present any problems. Try the clarinet first.

My daughter has now started rehearsals. She is the only student from her school to be playing an entire Reed part, not surprising since each part requires about four instruments. They are rehearsing without the three hired woodwind professionals right now, which is probably more difficult for her since she is playing harmony most of the time. She did manage to learn the clarinet well enough in the low register (in just 2 months), but it would take much longer to learn the instrument well. Playing the tenor sax is a bit difficult as well, because unlike the pros she is borrowing an old student model from the school and also she is mainly an alto-soprano player.
For some reason, the school has allowed a student flutist to play just the flute and piccolo parts in the musical ( a senior). Perhaps next year my daughter can try splitting Reed 1 with a flutist and playing the lead parts, depending upon the musical of course.
Anyway, thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions. They are very helpful for a young student, and it's given her ideas about possibly becoming a doubler in the future.

My daughter just finished the final performance playing Reed 3. It was a great opportunity for her; most of the pit orchestra were hired pros from military bands. She was able to play the entire book herself with no substitutions, and was pleased that she played all the oboe solos with no mistakes for all three shows. She learned more about the style of playing needed on sax and clarinet in the jazz sections from the pros.
I am writing this partly because I have seen some relatively negative comments from some people when young musicians have written in asking questions about playing in musicals (more on other forums). I want to dispell the notion (with a few people) that young people can't play Reed parts. She works hard, practices several hours a day, and there are other young people out there in the US who can do this too. We should encourage them to take advantage of opportunities like this at low level (high school, community) performances. Of course she doesn't play with the style of the pros (yet) but this was a great way to learn. She is sorry the musical is over and eagerly awaits the next opportunity.

I just wanted to say that I am really proud of your daughter. I myself am a freshman in high school and just finished 4 succesful performances of Hello, Dolly! doubling clarinet and alto sax in the Reed II book. I want to thank you and your daughter for trying to show that high school students can successfully play reed parts.

Haha. Yes I read her post about "shaking the sax". I've only had one show but I've never seen it in a score. Thank you for the kind words. I look forward to more shows in the future! I believe in a few years my director wants to do beauty and the beast, which I look forward too. I think it would be great if we did something like Millie though. In the past we've done Oliver!, carnival, fiddler on the roof and many more! I'm excited to finally be a part of it. I want to add another saxophone to my repertoire because alto is not enough to get by in most reed books.
