 French Bassoon HP or LP?
Author: M_Chavez

Howdy folks.

Can you please let me know if it is possible to tell (or make a guess) whether a vintage French bassoon is HP or LP by the length of its joints? Or any other tips how to identify HP or LP if there's no reed and one cannot check the pitch?

Thank you.

Four years late, and no, I don't have a tape measure, but I do have a measuring tape...!

The thing is, measurement alone can't tell you whether a Frenchy is HP or LP, because the length of the butt joint can vary by several inches, depending on whether it has a modern metal u-tube, or a cork plug at the bottom.

My H&S Excelsior, clearly marked LP, measures 50 7/8" from the bottom of the butt to the top of the bell, and 35" to the top of the wing joint. This horn has a metal u-tube.

My A.D. Royan is also LP, albeit unmarked, and measures 52 5/16" from the bottom of the butt to the top of the bell, and 36 13/16" to the top of the wing joint. This one has an older design, with a longer butt joint containing a 2 1/2" cork plug instead of a u-tube.

HTH.
