Sure. It's black with lots of holes and shiney keys with a bell shaped thingy at the end.

Sorry couldn't resist.

I can do better than that. Slightly different design than the R13; made concurrently with the R13 in the 1970's. Sold for the same price as an R13 at that time. You might check the placement of the register key; I believe the S-1 was placed a bit higher than the R13. Obviously, the R13 stayed while the S-1 came and went. Still, it is definitely a pro horn and some were very good.

A search here under S-1 will give you much information - some of it contradictory and based on the all famous "I think." But I believe your question asked for info from "people who know."

I had to borrow one in a pinch when I had a pad go leaky right before a performance. It was a wonderful horn. Played and sounded every bit as good as an R-13. Looks and feels R-13. Just a top notch professional horn IMHO.

I do clarinet repairs for a professional here in the Houston area that plays one. It sounds very nice and has good intonation. It seems to work for him quite well.

My first pro clarinet was a Buffet S-1, which was at the time (1974)considered to be a step above an R-13, and its cost was slightly more ($50). I was told that the bore was slightly smaller than an R-13, but I have no proof of that. It was a great clarinet, and I sold it when I purchased a new R-13. I considered purchasing one used...

The S-1 grew out of the BC20 design, with the same three-step bore of the R13 in the top section, but more narrow in diameter throughout. The lower section was the real departure in design, being built with a progressive flare.

The RC is the culmination of the design, with an even more pronounced narrowing up top and 3mm greater length on the bottom.

So there.

So where?

I've heard a dozen different explanations of the evolution of the S-1; if yours is definitive, I'd like to know why it is (person(s) who told you, etc.). Just so that we can put the other "guesses" to rest.

Entry #11

(Unlike most of my insubstantial opinions, this one has a footnote.)

All I see on the forum is that the S-1 came out of the BC20 design and was superceded by the RC, not any technical details. Did I miss something?
