I am almost done with my college apps and thinking about a new piece my chamber group can challenge. The instrumentation for this group is violin, cello, piano...and clarinet. I would like to try Messiaen quartet. I know all of us can technically play the piece but I dont think none of us can understand the piece at all. Putting it together will be also awfully hard I guess... Do you think it will worth trying (are the parts available anywhere)? Or do you have any other suggestion for this group? thanks

Just want to say happy and safe thanksgiving... I heard it's going to snow!

Hi, Won :)

It's nice to see you're doing so well, not afraid to get right in and try, or at least consider, something even if it's not familiar. If we were all as brave as you we'd be center stage all the time :]]] I don't know the piece you mention but I feel anything is worth trying. It looks like your group is on the right path.

I'd like to wish you and your friends, likewise, a happy and safe thanksgiving.

Another possibility would be the Hindemith quartet for the same instrumentation. I'm not sure it's any "easier" than the Messiaen, but it may seem more familiar to you in its form and notation.

You should also check Sherman Friedland's anaylsis of the Messien on this website - very useful and encouraging comments.

(Remember, though, if you squeak during Messiaen performance, nobody will notice.)
