I was thinking about auditioning for the Interlochen Arts camp and just wanted to run some questions by some of the clarinetists on the bulletin board.
First off I was reading alot of the previous posts about Interlochen and all of them said that it is very competitive as far as seating and chair placements and that sort of thing, but how competitive is it just to get into the camp?
Also for the Emerson Scholar auditions it says pick a movement from a piece on the list, a piece of your choice and a minor and major scale. From the piece you choose are you suppose to play the entire piece or just pick out a movement?
Also the brochure says one person from each state gets a Emerson scholarship, so if one person from each state gets a scholarship would the percentage of winning one be good or impossible?

For my audition tape, I chose the Mozart concerto, and only did the 1st movement. With the amount of tapes that IAC will be getting, they can only listen to so much. My second choice was Hindemith sonata 1st and 2nd movements. And sometimes there are two emerson winners if there aren't any for one of the states. One piece of advice: Don't put all your eggs in one Interlochen basket. There are many other fine camps out there.

Winning the Emerson Scholarship is difficult, but you've got to try, right? It depends on what state you're in, too - New York and California are harder to win, for example, than Wyoming or South Dakota due to population differences. I auditioned for the Emerson Scholarship in 1996. I didn't win, but they admitted me to the camp anyway and offered me some financial aid so that I was able to attend. It was at Interlochen that I decided to have a career in music....

I have been hoping to go to Interlochen for a few years, and now my teacher and I feel that I'm ready and I have a good chance of getting in. However, my parents are concerned about 1) the cost and 2) the time away from home. I love my parents, but I feel like this is an opportunity that will only be there for so long whereas I see them all year. I want to find a way to convince them to let me go, and come up with the money. Does anyone know about the financial aid situation? I could probably cover about 3000 of the 5000 dollar tuition. I don't think I have a chance at the Emerson, my best friend got it last year so I know what it takes and I'm not that good YET :-) Any suggestions would be helpful.

It's not very hard to just get into the camp. Now.. to get into orchestra... thats really hard to do. I have known only a few people able to make it in there.

I have never been in a music camp setting; however, I would love to have the opportunity to do so and get involved. I would in a long time to come, whenI die, well I don't know, let's just hope it's long to set up a camp for kids that is music based for special needs.
