 Corigliano Clarinet Concerto
Author: diz

There was a concert on Sunday featuring two clarinet concertos (Nielsen and Corigliano) - Queensland Orchestra and it was part of the Young Performers Competition.

I must confess I'd not heard the Corigliano before and was amazed by it's inventiveness and subtle colourings - obviously extremely challenging for the clarinetist.

I understand Corigliano's father was a violinist with the NY Phil and that part of this concerto was dedicated to that man.

The Queensland Orchestra played quite well, considering, the Nielsen was beautifully played. Other works were a marimba concerto (I ask you) and the Weber bassoon concerto.

Yes, John Corigliano Sr. was concertmaster of the NY Phil for a number of years. The slow movement was dedicated to him.

BTW, the concerto has quite a challenging part for both orchestral clarinettists, who are supposed to play from opposite sides of the auditorium.
