If you're a half step off for *every* note, your private teacher should have had you pull your barrel out slightly (or push it in, depending on whether you're sharp or flat). When my clarinet's barrel is pushed in all the way to the top joint, all of my notes are slightly sharp.

If you are really a half tone off, then you must be playing an A-clarinet instead of a B-flat??

Finding out why you are playing out of tune is one of the many reasons one would take clarinet lessons. You should first of all ask your teacher. He is, after all, right there as a witness to what you are doing.

A half tone is a lot!! Maybe you mean that you are 50 cents off. That would be half way between an A and Bb and would actually be a quarter tone. Definitely have your teacher check it out. Is this perhaps a very old clarinet (pre-1930)? If so, it might have been built to a different pitch standard.

Half step is too much to be off. Why doesn't your teacher know what's wrong? He- She should. It could be the instrument, what kind is it, is it very old, is it a French model, Buffet, Selmer etc.? You might need a longer barrel, you could have a 43, 44 mil. barrel, that would make even a good horn play sharp. Could be your mouthpece, but not a half step. You would have to be pinching an awful lot to be that sharp. Check that barrel. Other wise you have a big bore problem.
