ok, how's this for a puzzle. In 1983 i made a cassette recording of an old LP recording of the Reger Quintet (from the local library). I didn't make a note of WHO the clarinetist was. However, i do remember it was a German player, and i seem to remember the album cover saying that it was the first recording made of this work.
for years i have treasured this tape, however the library has long since sold off/given away the old LPs, and erased the old records (thrown away the index cards) so i don't know and can't find out WHO the clarinet player was. A German, and the premiere recording- any one out there know who the mystery clarinet player is/was?
very very lyrical playing, i have never heard Reger made to sound so good (though Russ Dagon came close at Clarinetfest 98 playing a sonata). My other (modern) recording of this work comes nowhere near it for singing phrases, glowing sound (from all involved) and finding tempi that sound ideal.
ANYONE KNOW WHO THIS MIGHT BE?

Recordings of this work have been relatively rare over the years. I have two LP's in my collection:
Karl Leister with the Drolc Quartet on DGG (can't find a copyright date!)
Franz Klein with the Heutling Quartet on Schwann Musica Mundi (1985 recording so it can't be the one)
While both are German, neither says anything about being a first recording.
The only other recordings I can find in the Canfield Guide (5th ed) are by Rudolph Gall with the Keller Quartet (Musica Rara 22) and Georges Coutelen with the Winterthur String Quartet (Concert Hall Society CHS 1244). I don't have these recording so I don't know whether either says anything about a first recording but, given the labels, both probably predate the two I have. Since Coutelen sounds French to me, my best guess would be the Gall. Perhaps someone else can add to this info or give you something else.
BTW, IMO, the Leister on DGG is beautifully done. If you are looking for a modern CD recording, you might try to find Sabine Meyer on EMI.
Best regards,
jnk

I have the Gall (on LP). It is a beautiful recording and I bet its the same one you're referring to.
I believe Gall was Leister's predecessor in Berlin. He also recorded the Weber 1st Concerto.
