OK, we all know about the inconsistency is Buffet's R13, but what are the serial numbers that one actually WANTS? I have heard many times about certain serial numbers being a lot better, and I have played on good ones and bad ones and the difference is absoloutely huge. And, judging by all this, my Buffet is pretty good (but not the best). It's S/N is 4579xx. Who's got a good one, bad one, or one similar to mine?

First of all, there is no such thing as a good serial number.
That myth was debunked years ago.
Many good teachers and players have favorite series, which they have grown to enjoy playing. One or a few of that particular series might play better than all the others of that vintage, but it really doesn't make the whole batch good.
I've been trying out clarinets for students for 30+ years, and I think the new Buffets are just fine. Every 6-8 years or so, I buy a new one for myself.
The last 480XXX I just tried was terrific, and my friend was pleased with what we found. You must try many new or fine used clarinets to find a really good one. Go with a teacher or experienced friend you can trust, for another pair of ears.
The only real problem is: the other person may like what you find so much, they want it for themselves!
Good luck with your search,
JJM

I have a few Buffets and I like all of them...even the old plastic Evette. I certain that a more experienced clarinetist than me could find discrete differences that I can't...but so what...

John Moses wrote what I was thinking, and he has far more experience trying clarinets than I do.
The time to buy a new Buffet is probably now, with Boosey selling it off soon. Their clarinets are as good as they have ever been.
In any case, clarinets don't last forever, so an older clarinet is only good if it was taken care of.

One factor is, of course, the condition of the clarinet. Even new Buffet clarinets have chipped tone holes that cause leaks regardless of the pad seating and quality. Also, many new Buffets are not adjusted properly. After adjustment and getting rid of leaks it's easier to compare them. Good luck!

Horns coming out since the arrival of Francois Kloc have been superior... yours was built after he came over.
Forget this c**p, it's a waste of time.

Buffets, Selmers, Leblancs or whatever - the serial number is irrelevant. Just try the instruments out and then decide which one you like. Remember, one man's treasure might very well be another man's junk.
