Depends on what you want to clean off. In any case you want to avoid getting the pads wet, certainly not soaking wet.
For a general purpose cleaning to get built up dirt off, remove the keys and use dish detergent and warm water and a medium soft scrub brush. Soon afterward, make sure all pivots, screws and springs are thoroughly dried and appropriately oiled. Silvo is a good tarnish remover if you have lotsa time and are careful around the pads. If you're doing an overhaul, Ferree's sells a pretty good liquid cleaner. If you have a shop setup, a light buffing does a real nice job.
If you have oodles of time you can 'rag' it. Use strips of cloth, with buffing compound, to rag back and forth (shoeshine fashion) in, around and between the keys and springs. Use a larger cloth for the bell and barrel areas.

Make sure it's not lacquered first

If its silver, DON'T use silver dips as used in the kitchen. They will eat your springs alive. I've seen some that were "quick cleaned" that way in junktique shops and they were ruined. I use cloth strips and Q-tips along with Happich Semichrome polish.

Put it in the dishwasher on "pot scrubber" setting?

Hey, Diz... why not? A friend of mine who does handyperson work washes her paint rollers in the (clothes)washing machine. Works great on the plastic core ones - cardboard types disintegrate.
Man, we sure learn a lotta dumb stuff here :)
