the way I know is te bore of an RC is carved slightly diffrent to get a more "European" sound, versus the R-13 has more of the sound most people over here look for. Thats how I had it briefly explained to me without much detail, though I would like a better answer than that, and what the heck is "European" sound?

The sound is distinctly different, as is the intonation. Both are fine clarinets. The "which should I buy" or "which is better" questions are kind of irrelevant - if you're ready to spend that kind of money you should be able to differentiate between the two clarinets. If you can't differentiate between them then perhaps it isn't time to buy a new one.

Unless, of course, you don't have any access to them from your location, in which case I strongly recommend that you save enough money to take a trip to a place that does have different models available for trial and plan on spending some days trying them. Next year the ClarinetFest in Salt Lake City will be a fine place, as will many of the other clarinet and/or educators conferences held in various places in the world.

I agree with Mark. You need to be able to play the clarinets. You also should have in mind what playing characteristics you like in an instrument. Perhaps you should let your private teacher help you out or just wait, like Mark suggests.

Charles, (dare i say it, I might start an uproar :P) European sound = warmer, often darker, more mellow = nicer sound :)

Whichever you decide on, make sure it is correctly tuned for your area. Clarinets sold in France are tuned to A=442; in the United States A=440. Otherwise they are both beautiful instruments. I myself play on an RC and love it.

One of my students has an RC which works quite nice, although I find personally the throat register somewhat trickier to tune and focus than the R13. What I prefer on the R13 is the frankness and clariety of spech it has-----
. also the RC is a softer more softer sound whilst the R13 is more crisp and volatile in color and sound.

I own an r-13 and couldn't be happy with any other clarinet it's responsive and has a wonderful tone. it's also a standard with most fine clarinet player. go for the r-13
