I'm about to do a senior recital and would like suggestions on a piece I can do with clarinet, voice and piano. Male voice preferably.

Have you heard of The Sheperd on the Rock (Der Hirt auf dem Felsen) by Schubert?
It's a really nice piece, although for clarinet and soprano. I don't remember if there is piano, too.

I hate it when the German is miss-translated (Not your fault I assure you) A "Felsen" is acctualy a "Cliff" ... now it sounds so much more ..dramatic!!!! And the interpritation of the music aswell. (Just my bug-a-boo LOL)

I have checked five different dictionaries. All of them list "rock; boulder" for Felsen and none show cliff. Oddly enough, if I look up cliff in these same dictionaries, I get "Klippe" in four of them but "Klippe; Felsen" in the fifth. There is obviously some variation in meaning depending on the usage but the main meaning of Felsen does indeed seem to be rock. I think that one would have to look at the lyrics of the entire piece to determine the intended meaning.

If I might, this Shubert piece is great. It is very dramatic, I think, for both the singer and the clarinetist.
There is plenty of range required by the singer even within the same phrase High "G" to an "E" a 10th down. High Bb held at end and a high B natural lept to from a "D". Need a good versital singer. I did this in recital only because I had a friend (female) whom I knew could do it well.
Good luck. I also believe that Schubert has other music for the same combination of voice, clarinet and piano. Try the database. You can find anything there. Other composers? Lot's to look at there.

Vaughn Williams wrote some very nice pieces for voice and clarinet, again female voice. Unfortunately I don't know the titles.
