Evette Schaeffer, etc.
Author: Rob Zucker

What's the consensus on the older Buffet-made Evette Schaeffer
or even the MASTER model clarinets ?

Are they worthy instruments , comparable to the pre R-13 Buffets
in sound/quality ? They are larger bore clarinets, yes ?

Has anyone here owned or played them ?

Thank you for any answers !

Rob,
Great to do a search. My personal experience with these instruments, like anything else, runs poor to great. Some of them play very well and can compete with the upper line Buffet clarinets and others, well, not so good. The problem with older instruments is you don't have the luxury of having several of them to try out at the same time. Try to get a trial period if you are interested in one so that you can return it if necessary.
Good Luck.

I have an E13 Evette and Schaeffer Bb clarinet dating from 1974. Its a great instrument - I used it for years before trading up to R13.

At that time (early 1970s) I believe that the E13 clarinets were pretty much the same as the R13s and made on the same production line (I saw the factory in 1980). However the wood used for the E13 was not up to R13 quality, there were some minor (cosmetic) differences to the keywork (silver was not available) and there was no A clarinet made.

Look at the first hole in the lower joint. See if it is fraised. It probably is not. I believe that is the one significant difference between Evettes, Evette-Schaeffers and R-13's. If you have an E&S or Evette (Master Model or not) with a fraised top hole, let us know.

P.S. That is, since (based on info on this BB) some time in 1969 for Evette and some year before 1956 for E&S. These are points at which they converted from the cylindrical upper joint according to Pat Parkin's measurements on examples in his (her) possession.

Just checked my 70 years old E&S, ALL tone holes, including the first, are undercut on the LJ and only two tone holes are undercut on the UJ. My 1972 Evette has no undercutting on UJ. First tone hole on the LJ doesn't have undercutting, but the rest are undercut.....V

I meant that the top hole fraising on the LH was possibly the one significant difference between the R-13 the Evettes and E&S's once they converted to the polycylindrical upper bore. Lee Gibson said that it was the one difference between the E-12 and the R-13 in 1986. It is interesting that you have a 1972 Evette with no undercutting in the upper joint. Parkin said he had a D7924 of 1966(not an MM) with undercut holes. Perhaps he meant only on the lower joint. I had assume that when he said "undercut holes" vs. "no undercutting" that he meant normal undercutting which would have been through the UJ and LJ. My 1974 Evette Master Model clearly has undercutting on the ring finger hole of the UJ and, I think on the next one above it. I can't see the rest. Maybe this is one of those allusive differences between the Evette and the Evette Master Model.

Oops. I mean elusive. Too much Fourth of July. BTW Parkin says (based on examples in his possession) that Evettes went from a cylindrical UJ to a polycylindrical UJ in the middle of 1969. Perhaps Buffet gradually moved in this period from unfraised cylindrical UJ to unfraised poly to fraised poly in the Evettes, with the Master Models being advanced somewhat before the regular models. We need more examples of each type (E&S, Evette, and MM's of each) to pin the change dates and characteristics down.
