In the new issue of the Clarinet there are the most beautiful barrels I have ever laid eyes on. The url is: www.backunmusical.com
Does anyone have any experience with these barrels?

Wow. Those are spectacular. *gets crystal ball* I predict that Josh will be on the phone with Canada today...I think I also just may have found salvation for my Mollenhauer :) I'll let you know how everything turns out! (and HOW spiffy was that Buffet with the new barrel and bell, and the gold keys?! Woo!)

I got to play the Backun barrels in April. He let me try 3 of them. They were incredible. My tone especially in the high register had more clarity and ring. His bells are great too. I never knew a bell could make such a difference in tone quality. If you're planning a trip to Vancouver, definitely visit Morrie's shop. When it comes to repairs, he's amazing. I live in Seattle but drive my clarinets up to him for work. BTW, his barrels and bells are more beautiful in person.

Todd,
What is the price range on the barrels? If they sound as good as they look...WOW!!! What wood are you talking about for the high register?
Thanks,
Jean

I didn't ask about prices. The three barrels I tried were each made of different woods. I don't remember what they were except for the cocobolo wood.

I just got an e-mail back from Morrie about prices:

Barrels are $160, and his bells are $450.

Was looking into getting a bell made for my C clarinet (came with a synthetic bell), but that's almost as much as i paid for the clarinet itself.
