I recently had to ship my Bass Clarinet out of state for repair. Being concerned that it could be damaged by exposure to temperature and humidity extremes while in transit, I insured it with the shipper. I told them of my concern and they stated that the insurance only covered damaged items who's packaging showed obvious signs of damage (like crushing or puncture), not damage due to heat. They said if I was concerned about heat that I should ship it in a refrigerated truck (Yikes!).
Most of us would not dare leave our clarinet in a parked car for even fifteen minutes. However, it appears that the commercial shipping companies make no consideration whatsoever about leaving packages in a hot truck or a freezing airplane cargo bay for any length of time.
So what is the safest way to send your precious clarinet across country in a reasonable time and economical manner?
How do manufacturers safely ship their instruments to other countries?

Mine (new Buffet Prestige 1194-2) arrived by UPS in a cardboard box filled with those yellow plastic pellets, the case wrapped in plastic. Probably was shipped from California to Chicago--in March weather--much the same way. While we try to take super care of our expensive instruments-in many ways, probably better care than we do of ourselves--they are probably like our children, much stronger and resilient than we think. Insurance is advised, and is not expensive compared to the possible cost of replacement. Hope this helps...........

How do manufacturers safely ship their instruments to other countries?
The ones I've seen first hand, Buffets, come in heavy, thick, sturdy cardboard boxes. I doubt the instruments are exposed to rapid enough termerature changes to be concerned. The heavy box is insulation enough. I'm sure they insure against handling damage though.
