Orchestra loudness to Greg Smith

To pick up from an earlier thread that turned from Rome Festival to Orchestra loudness.

Greg and others,
When your principal trombone Jay Friedman came to our orchestra RSPO he was preaching the gospel of soft dynamics. Since the brass section of CSO has a reputation of being very loud I was happily surprised when he said things like "no conductor is gonna make my section play louder than we want to or what is musically defendable".
What is your reflection about your brass section. Can we finally dump the reputation of them playing louder than others or what is your opinion.

In RSPO people use earplugs too and we have an ongoing discussion to keep the volume down at least in rehersals. There are times when music asks for to be played very loud and so it shuld be, but one shuld never forget that as much as we love music and our work, orchestras are a dayly occupation for people with human ears and the fragile system that they are made of can very easily get damaged when working in an invironment with very often more than 100 dB.

I work in an orchestra and have damaged hearing in my right ear, and this from generally playing with the piccollo I fear. I don't mean to respond ahead of Mr. Smith, but after 15 years of orchestral work I fear my job is a factor in the loss of hearing I have.
