Thank you-and a follow up on "drying reeds&qu

Thank you all---
I just find all this very interesting because I've been playing clarinet for maybe 9 or so
years now---I'm not one of the greats, but i'm ok---and I see people with all these different things and talking about working with their reeds and everything....and for me, its not much of an issue. I mean I buy a box of reeds (regular vandoren 4) and I can always play them right out of the box--sometimes one won't sound great, but I'll just put it back and try again on a different day and its fine. As far as keeping them, I just keep them in the plastic sleeve thing that they come in in the box. I don't know, it doesn't seem to be a problem.....it's just that someone mentioned it to me and its got me wondering now. I there something specific to look for? are those cases generally ok for keeping reeds? Thanks for any more evaluations/or advice or whatever!!

Thanks a lot!

Julia

Julia,

I remember back in grade school when I first started playing clarinet, we were not instructed on reeds further than "this is the way you put a reed on a clarinet". I think back now and remember not thinking at all about the how's and why's of reeds. We just played our reeds until they wore out completely. Ahh ignorance is truly bliss sometimes! I don't ever remember having more than 2 or 3 reeds at a time.

Now we all know the importance of reeds (I've gone as far as making several reeds to learn as much as possible about them and I highly recommend this to everyone) but if you can go on playing without messing about with reeds I say you are not off track. If you can identify a good reed you have mastered a skill that will allow you play music without the anguish some people have with reeds.

As far as storage goes I have experienced longer lasting reeds placing them in a case with plate glass. This is not to say that others have not had good luck using other methods.

I always look forward to what other people have to say about reeds on this BB.

Best Regards,

don't use the plastic sleeve things that the reeds come in. they're bad for the reed. And, they're a pain to handle. I prefer to keep my reeds together instead of all looose and scattered.

I liked the one in the other posting about the guy burning one reed in front of the others to put the fear of g into them. Most of us probly have "reed fetishes". Years ago reeds came in cheap paper things that held two reeds..one on each side. That's all we used to store them in.

Why number 4? I am a full time player and I use at the hardest a Vintage 3 but mainly a half strength lower Vintage XL 3 or V12 3. I get maybe 1 or 2 duds per box but 8 out of 10 generally work and i use about 3 or 4 up in a fortnight, every fortnight. 1 box per month on both clarinet and tenor. 5 or 6 boxes of alto's per year, a couple of boxes of soprano plus bassoon reeds. I should buy shares in the company!
