Does anyone know of any pieces with clarinet that were written by Persian (Iraq, Iran) composers or pieces that were influenced by Persian music. I am trying to put together other pieces to go with Henry Cowell's "Persian Set".
Thanks!

I dont know of the composer's ancestry, but "In a Persian Market", Ketelby [sp?] and "On the Steppes of Central Asia", Borodin [I believe] [nice Eng Horn solos] come to mind. Don

Absolutely "In the Steppes of Central Asia" by Borodin - and "Procession of the Sardar" by Ippolitov-Ivanov.
["Persian Set" is fabulous. The first time I heard it I could've sworn it was by some obscure Russian Romantic composer, but no!]

Sorry, I'd love to be able to help ... the Russians mentioned above are about as Persian as Debussy was Spanish (musical reflections rather than indigenous works).

In 1997 I played a new music concert and on the program was a piece by an Iranian composer named Reza Vali. He was teaching at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh at that time. I don't know if he is still there or if he has written any clarinet music but he might be able to give you some leads.

Cowell also wrote a "Homage to Iran" for violin and piano, I was wondering if there was a clarinet transcription of it?
