The whole idea behind squeezing finger legato is to avoid the "pops" between notes. It's a little easier to understand when going from lower to higher. On the lower note slightly squeeze your fingers down just before leaving for the higher note. The thought is that by squeezing down first, the motion of your fingers is smoother when they lift from the holes and keys, lessing the popping sound on the second note of the interval. Try starting on D in the staff going to E, then F and then F#. You'll probably find that the D to F# is the hardest to do.
Going down an interval what you don't want to do is slam your fingers down on the keys or holes but smoothly closing the holes.
Squeeze finger legato works best when you keep in mind that what you are after is having any two notes having the same character of sound as smoothly connected as possible.
Look at Rose number 2 as well or Klose thirds studies.
To really get good results requires many hours of slow practice and critically listening to your sound. But it pays off.
