 Buying a C clarinet
Author: Crissy
Date:   2002-05-03 23:17

I'm looking into buying a C clarinet, and have done lots of exploring on various websites. Time to ask the experts! I was thinking about a Buffet E-11, but I'm open to suggestions. I currently have a Buffet Festival, Buffet Elite, and an E-11 in Bb. I'd really like to hear your thoughts, and especially some suggestions on where to purchase a C clarinet.
Thanks!

Crissy...IMO, at this time, the Buffet E-11 C clarinet is probably one of the best buys in the clarinet world. I've tried a number of them for my students, and all have been remarkably consistant and with a very high quality of workmanship. The tone is quite remarkable, from this "intermediate line" instrument.

I own a Buffet R-13 C from 1985, and today, if I had to recommend a new C clarinet, the E-11 would no doubt be the hands on winner.

(I better not say this too strongly, or Buffet may start realizing that this horn is severly underpriced)...GBK

I have a Leblanc Esprit in C that's a very nice horn, though I think I heard something about this model being discontinued. Also the Patricolas have developed a good reputation, especially the the C and Eb models.

Anyone tried the Amatis? I was just at WW/BW website...I never really trust them, but if someone out there has any experience, please advise...

I did try a friend's E11C last year...was pretty good, but I'm still really accustomed to my R13 Bb so it was actually really weird! ;)

Also, this friend had purchased it from Muncy, since they actually have them in stock and WW/BW is always on backorder for them. He paid a little more, but he said it was worth not having to wait for it.

Brad Wong at Western Michigan University has a Patricola C:

Several highly recommended instruments played rather flat in the altissimo range - don't buy anything from a catalog unless you yourself have played one with your mouthpiece setup.

Regards,

Ralph

My professional experience with the C clarinet has been quite negative. The Buffet pro models I have tried tend to be something of a dissapointment in matters of tone and in some ares of the range tuning wise. In the Beethoven symphonies i prefer to transpose at site instead of making music on the C instruments...
