 Recording Klienes Konzert Alfred UHl
Author: chris Raddatz

does anyone know of any good recordings of Alfred Uhl's Klienes konzert for viola clarinet and piano? I've been searching around on the web and haven't come up with anything.

Thanks

There may be others, but it's the only recording I know of...GBK

GBK points you to CRS 8116, an old LP by John Russo. I'd forgotten he had recorded this... but then (IMHO) most of his performances are... how shall I put it? -- eminently forgettable. There is also an even older LP on Grenadilla coupled with the Bruch Concerto for Clarinet, Viola and Orchestra. I suspect both will be difficult to find. Try

just in case.

However, a quick check of my Schwann shows a more recent (CD) recording on SIUE 6008. I note that this was recorded at the Sheldon Concert Hall right here in St. Louis in 1998 (probably a live concert) but until now I was unaware of it. Given it was recorded here, I suspect that SIUE stands for Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville so perhaps this was a university recording of a faculty recital and is available through the music department there. The performers were C. Hinson (va), J. M. Hinson (cl) and L. Perry (p).

Best regards,
jnk

Jack -

The Bruch Double Concerto LP on the Grenadilla label is more than just rare -- it was never issued. Richard Gilbert, who ran Grenadilla, told me he got the tapes from an eastern European source and pressed about 1000 copies. He sent a few advance copies to subscribers, reviewers and libraries, but then he couldn't clear the copyright permissions and had to destroy the entire run. Thus there are only about 100 copies in existence (of which I have one).

There's a CD recording, I think with Paul Meyer.

Best regards.

Ken,

There is a also a CD recording of the Bruch with Eduard Brunner. According to a Googol search, the Grenadilla recording was GS 1005. Ithaca College has a copy in their library. Parnassus has apparently had at least one copy for sale for $15 at one time.

Fascinating story.

Jack
