 Reeds on Ebay...HOLY CATS!!
Author: Brian Peterson

Has anyone looked for reeds on Ebay today? Some seller has 12, maybe 13 pages of listings. I've never seen anything like it! If only my music store had that kind of inventory of V 12 3.5's.

This is why I made my earlier posting regarding bass clarinet reeds. This link is for all clarinets--check it out!!!

Good Clarineting!!!!! (not finding a reed is no excuse here)

True! The real kicker is I've actually seen a couple ads for vintage, well seasoned (used) reeds. Ick!

How many clarinetists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Only one, but he'll go through a whole box of bulbs before he finds just the right one.

I hope everyone unloaded their Vandoren and Rico stock this morning. With all these reeds floating around out there, I'm sure we'll see a corresponding drop in price. ; )

Yeah I saw them and got mad as hell. The guy should have listed only one brand at a time and given bidders a choice of strength. I've seen sellers do this before. It's frustrating to go through all those pages looking for anything but reeds.

The little guy who puts the one good reed in each box must have died or retired.

I've never been in the seller seat on e-bay, but isn't there a charge per listing? If so, this guy must have spent a fortune.

Hmmm, you know, if the seller had simply done dutch auctions, it would have fit on part of a page. As it is, all those single listings make it more time consuming to search through. The seller is not doing himself any favors.

The seller currently has 1,273 auctions going. You can view all his auctions at:

Carol, did you personally count all those? That's even more exciting than our usual discussions.

No need to count. If you click on the link, eBay tells you how many auctions the seller has running.

Isn't it only 235 auctions going.
Maybe I just couldn't fine the rest.

The Dutch auctions would have suited him.....and us.

Most of the auctions had ended by the time you checked the link. That's why you can't find them.

Oh...I see.

Well? Who of us got great deals on these reeds?

I e-mailed the seller to ask where these came from. (Dumb question???)
His reply was.....

"We are a retailer, and were a little overstock and reeds.

As to the exact origin of the reeds - most likely the bamboo forests in
France :-)

Thanks!

Chris Reighley"

"Well? Who of us got great deals on these reeds?"

Probably nobody. The seller's prices weren't much better (if they were any better) than the mail-order houses' and the seller didn't have many professional reeds in the most popular strengths. Several months ago, I purchased about 10 boxes each of Vandoren regulars and Grand Concert thick blanks in my usual strengths for under $8 per box. IMHO, THAT was a good deal. In that case, the seller used eBay as a way to advertise a reed business he was starting.

Unfortunately for him, he apparently bought equal quantities of all strengths and makes. Buyers snapped up the popular ones at his "loss leader" prices and left him with alot of reeds he may never sell. I've revisited his website several times and note that: (1) he has raised his prices and (2) he still doesn't appear to have replenished his stock. I hope arundo donax is nourishing.

Best regards,
jnk
