sounds good!
I think i have some way to go though...
its so hard to get orchestral clarinet places, for a start you have to be in the right place at the right time...and then you have to actually be good enough get the place. Pretty much impossible!
Oh well..keep practising I guess

Flattered as I am ... been there, done that. My orchestral life was great, when I was younger, but I wouldn't want to go back to it. I like my Friday and Saturday nights in front of the telly. However, if the wonderful young principal clarinetist of the AYO is reading this ... it might just be worth auditioning, the MSO is a fine orchestra and it will be a tough job to secure, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Sussanah - never give up on your dreams. There are so many factors involved in getting one of those very rare orchestral clarinet jobs. To start with, you need to be the of the best at the instrument (not impossible), you need to have a vision (determine where you want to go), and you need to work tirelessly towards that. It might be "better" to focus on gig work, as you will probably have more opportunity at gaining at least some work.
In New York, Los Angeles, Sydney or any other city where there are "big broadway shows" staged often - there is a lot of work. If you can play flute and sax to a high standard, too, then this is almost a prerequisit for gig work. A lot of the modern broadway shows require jacks- and jills-of-all-trades no matter where they are staged.
Don't lose your dream if that's your desire. My two cents' worth.
