My name is Michele (aka Shelly) and I am a 38 year old, stay-at-home mom of 5 children ages 16 to 3. I homeschool the entire herd :)

We live in central Florida in a very rural area, in the middle of swamp to be exact. We have the assorted wildlife on our property that you would expect to see in FL, gators, a plethora of snakes, gopher tortoises and occasional bobcats, deer and fox.

I am back playing the clarinet after not playing for 10 years. Prior to that, I played for a total of 16 years. I am currently playing a Selmer CL300 with a Leblanc K10M mouthpiece (Thank you Brenda for the MP!!!!!). I bought the clarinet used in excellent condition for a good price. (We live VERY frugally!) Maybe one day I will be able to afford to upgrade.

I am joining the church orchestra the first week in June (after I get through soccer season. I have 3 playing). I play clarinet with my 2nd daughter who plays the piano. Bascially, I play for pleasure :) I do not belong to a school band or professional orchestra and I do not have a famous teacher guiding me.

As far as music, I like praise and worship music. I like some of the old hymns but I admit they tend to put me to sleep. I like jazz and some blues. I love classical. I am very into music theory (maybe because I was never taught any in school). I also love studying about all the different composer's lives and the different periods of music.

I would love to learn more about composing music. (That's why I am into music theory so much).

Anything else you would like to know?

Shelly

Sylvain - Recently we had threads here entitled "Why the Clarinet" and "Which Clarinet". I retrieved both by searching via "experience". They had lots of the personal info that I believe you are asking for. In mine, I [lengthily !] described my early days, others provided a fine description of "then and now", so you might consider what is now available and ? make out a format ? for your "questionaire". Do you have thots on this, Mark C?? Don

Don,
I know we had many discussions on our different backgrounds, playing habits, favorites.
I just thought this was the simpliest way to compile most of this info in one thread.

Finding an automatic way of getting the info from the different previous threads and formatting it seems quite the task.

If you already gave all this info, you can always copy/paste or give a link like this http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=42829&t=42705

Don,
If I put a questionaire on Sneezy then I'm liable for the protection of the information gathered - both the US "minors" law and the EU privacy laws. Rather than get legally involved with age verification et al., I don't solicit or require any of the information.

Im Joseph William O'Kelly
I am 17 years old and plan on going to college and eventually recieve a doctorate in clarinet performance. I hope to someday be a clarinet soloist but figure I'll be teaching and playing woodwinds in musicals until then. I also plan on minoring in English because many praise my writing.

I started playing clarinet in 5th grade. My favorite clarinet piece is the Copland Carinet concerto.

I find it funny how I was introduced to music through Big Band music. I started clarinet with the goal that I wanted to play someday like BG. I thought classical music was boring. I spent all of middle school playing jazz. I was immediatly hooked on classical at the begining of high school and relized what I was neglecting. I wish I had spent some time in middle school to give classical a chance. Then again I love having the skill of jazz on my side.

I love playing music and teaching it. I recently took on some students that I enjoy seening grow each week. It is truly a thrill.

I think it is great that there is a sight for fellow clarineters to get together a share ideas.

My name is Leanne, but until recently I was known as "kontragirl" Why the name change? It's starting to look like my contralto is going back into the storage closet for good.
I'm 17 years old and I am a citizen of the USA. I live in Colorado. I'm a student, but I am planing on majoring in composition. I started playing clarinet about 8 years ago. I don't have any clarinet idols, I relate all instruments to clarinet. I guess I should say my musical influence is the band Creed.
My favorite piece to play on clarinet is one that I wrote myself called "Going Solo". On bass, I have a three movement bass clarinet concerto that I love playing.
My favorite instrument is my Yamaha Allegro (but shh...don't tell my bass guitar I said that). I also love both of my mouthpieces, the Giggioti (sp) and my Hite Premier. I use a Robert Vinson ligature and I play on Mitchell Lurie 4's.
My teacher is a college student who drives 30 minute every Wednesday just to yell at me for not practicing :)
The music on my stand right now is from the Rose 32 Etudes. I'm working on number 10 and 11 for a section leader audition.

If you would like, call me paranoid from having read 1984 many years ago (prior to 1984), but I'm someone who prefers a little privacy. I occasionally reveal bits of my life here, but I don't want to make it easy for some ill-intentioned person to locate and stalk or harass me, determine if my instruments are worth stealing, etc.

I realize that most everyone who frequents this bulletin board is a decent, helpful person. But, on the other hand, anyone who has access to the Internet also has access to this bulletin board.

Every individual has to decide for him/herself what they are willing to post here, but, in my opinion, anyone under age 18 should be strongly discouraged from revealing personal information. The more people know, the more vulnerable you are.

Well put ! , Don P, my concerns exactly! We and prob all of us have received "Privacy Statements" recently, and I have been quite concerned at the widespread availability of our very-personal info/addresses/phone no's which leads to E Mail spam, porn, and hopefully not to violence, theft etc . So without giving away more than is already public, I'm Don in NE OK, nearly 82, retired Chem Eng, still doing patent work for Tulsa Univ., still playing bass cl in comm. bands, sop cl and alto sax in church orchs, trios and Bdwy Musicals and at times symph. Am a minor collector of ww insts, mediocre repair-man and a visitor to musical museums. Favorite music, Bizet "L'Arlesienne" Suites [and "Carmen"], Mendelssohn "Mid-Summer Nights", most any Tschaik, Beeth, Offenbach etc etc, clar jazz, Dixie and German band, musicals, G&S, R&H, Camelot, Brigadoon, Sound of M. All I can think of now . Nuff for now? Don

Name:

Meri

Age: 22

Lives: Toronto, ON, Canada

Current Occupations:

College student and Computer Education Assistant in an elementary school.

Started clarinet:

7th grade, 12 years old. But I wanted to play it since I was 10.

Why clarinet?

Because of my familiarity with it in Macedonian music. Don't remember being attracted to any of the other instruments used in them.

Favorite Clarinet Recordings:

Ralph Manno--Brahms Clarinet Quintet (Arte Nova), Clarinet Evergreens (Naxos)

Favorite Clarinet Performers:

Kalman Berkes, Sabine Meyer, Ralph Manno.

Setup:

I don't think the audience cares, as long as you sound good.

Current teacher:

Why should we really care who someone studied with? As long as you sound good. Also because unless you live in the Toronto area, there's little chance you know him. But write to me if you want to know anyway.

What's in the works:

Pieces most of you have probably not heard of. But if you want to know...

Music Heroes:

My favorite high school music teacher, who is probably the greatest influence as to why I think about music the way I do. She and I still keep in touch with each other regularly!

Age:
29

Citizen of:

Lives in:
Copenhagen

Occupation:
Student of philosophy and greek + aspiring artist (graphic novels)

Started clarinet:
november 2000

Clarinet Idols:
Ferus Mustafov, Petro-Loukas Halkias, Lazaros Valkanis, Kurt Bjorling, Andy Statman, Mustafa Kandirali

Favorite music:
- classical: Mozart, Shostakovich, Orff, Nielsen, Grieg, baroque/renaissance stuff for recorder (I like playing that kind of music on clarinet, too - sounds great, even though the music was written before the thing was invented).

- jazz: be-bop, cool (too bad that stuff is rarely played on clarinet - but Steve Lacy does a great job on the soprano sax ...).

- folk: balkan gypsy music ("cocek"), Goran Bregovic, rembetika (rarely played on clarinet, unfortunately), macedonian, bulgarian and epirote music.

- - and then there's a lot of pop/rock stuff that i like, but that is not very clarinet related (well, some of the above isnt't either) ... but I think that some of The Doors' songs would sound great with a clarinet playing Ray Manzarek's keyboeard parts. I would love to do that one day ...

Equipment:
Yamaha YCL-26II
Yamaha 4C mouthpiece
V12 #3-3,5; Rico Grand Concert #2-2,5

Music on my stand:
Some etudes that my teacher gave me. Just as important as my stand, however, is my CD player, since I play a lot by ear - mostly rembetika and Goran Bregovic.
