I recently bought an old bundy off ebay for marching band. I got it for only 28 dollars. It came in today, and it is in almost working order, just missing a few pads, but is kind of out of shape. I can replace the pads on my own, and was wondering if it is worth it to go in and get it fixed up. I have read posts earlier about how marching band beats up instruments, but was thinking that the poor condition of the instrument wight keep me from doing the best I can. What does everyone else think?

JUST A SUGGESTION, CONSIDER HAVING A "PLAYING CONDITION ONLY" SET-UP DONE ON YOUR INSTRUMENT AT YOUR LOCAL REPAIR FACILITY. SUCH REPAIRS ARE NOT VERY EXPENSIVE AND WILL INSURE THAT ALL PADS ARE INSTALLED CORRECTLY SO THAT NO LEAKAGE OCCURS AND THAT ALL KEYS ARE PROPERLY ADJUSTED. AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY, WILL ALLOW YOU TO BE AT YOUR MARCHING BAND BEST. ENJOY THE APPLAUSE FROM THE MULTITUDES IN THE STANDS AND GOOD CLARINETING!!!!

Pads are a very small part of getting an old, neglected clarinet going with a semblance of reliability. Wobbling posts, sloppy pivots, and high friction where it shouldn't be, are just three very common problems that have serious consequences.
If there are examples of these three, and possibly much more, all over the instrument, then there is no such thing as a 'playing condition' job by attending to pads. It is equivalent to doing a paint job on a car without removing the rust.

Bundys are indestructible. As long as the keys and springs aren't broken or missing and the pad rims don't have gouges out of them, $28 is a great deal. Wipe off the dust, put on fresh pads and play outdoors forever.
