The requirements for the upcoming (late June) local youth orchestra auditions are 2 contrasting unaccompanied pieces or concerto movements. Since I will not be needing accompaniment and I won't be getting an A clarinet unless I win the audition, would it be acceptable to play a piece for A clarinet on the Bb without transposing?

In most cases this would be perfectly acceptable at a youth orchestra audition.
The orchestra may have A clarinets for students to check out or rent. You might check with the committee chair.

You may contact the orchestra if you're really worried about it. However, if they want you to transpose a part, they'll usually tell you that specifically. If you have the time to learn it both ways though, that's certainly a good idea =)
Good luck with the audition!

Hey. I know the feeling of needs an A clarinet for an audition, i did my freshman year and did an audition with out one, major mistake. If I were you, i would be majorly slick and do everything on Bb clarinet. Like a Weber Concerto and beethoen excerpts. Good luck!

Youth orchestras don't honestly mind. If it is unaccompanied they shouldn't worry! James's advice is good, however i played the verdi requiem with my local youth orchestra and transposed the whole thing to Bb. Bit naughty really, but it saves problems with tuning!

Jacy -
Borrow an A clarinet. It's impressive and will make the difference if everything else is equal.
Best regards.

Never do this because the listener(s) in the audition may have perfect pitch...
