Anyone have opinions of these schools? Their bands, clarinet instructors, anything? I will be going to grad school to one of these places for a non-music major, but I am taking the music departments into consideration for my choice. I _have_ researched them on my own, and I'm looking solely for personal opinions now. I didn't want you to think I haven't been doing my homework

Have you considered The University of North Texas music school (as long as you are considering the Dallas area)?
Their reputation is well known. I have not attended either but I have lived in the Dallas area for more than 40 years and this seems to be the "word" around here -- maybe because they have a nice jazz band. They also have a radio station KNTU (mostly jazz) can't recall their URL at the moment. Also, because it is a state university, chances are that the tuition is less than SMU.

Paul Garner at SMU is a first rate professional, playing the assistant/Eb spot in the Dallas Symphony. He has a very fine clarinet studio at SMU....lots of very fine young players, everyone in his current crop of clarinet students are gunners.
Good ensembles.

Music aside, SMU is an excellent school overall with a great reputation in many areas. The campus is beautiful if you haven't seen it, and Dallas has a most "un-urban" feeling for a large city.

In what area do you plan to do your graduate studies? What do you plan to do after you finish your graduate work? and where would you like to live? What are your music goals?
Best regards,
