Use right hand thumb

I was astonished to find in Mr.Ridenour's fingering book that Ralph McLane used right hand thumb to push trill keys for improving intonation while supporting the instrument on the knee(of course in sitting position).

Does anyone use this technique? I would like to know how to practice it.I wondered if I can use this technique while I am standing using neck string support!

I play a german sys basset horn which has 4 regular keys (for low C to Eb) to be operated by the right hand thumb. I cannot operate theese keys when I use a neck strap (you would have to hold the instrument in the correct angle by putting the force into the 'mechanical lever whole clarinet' by your left hand thumb and the upper front teeth) - moreorver I don't like the preassure in the neck. I use the standard pin when sitting and a selfmade long pin when standing. The carrying element of my long pin is a brass tube (10 mm outside diameter) bought at a hardware store.
A length adjustable pin (made of two tubes, inside slides into outside, adjusted with a nut on the outer tube -> conical thread) should work for the clarinet if you find a good solution a attach it to the thumb rest.
