 HELP!!! RECITAL VERY SOON!
Author: Rob Bell
Date:   2002-04-18 13:22

I have a short recital to do on Tuesday 23rd April.

I need a piece to go with the 1st Movement of the Sonatina by Malcolm Arnold.

It can't be drawn from the following list since i have already used them for my assesment:

Mozart: Concerto in A
Brahms: Sonata in F Minor Op. 120
Brahms: Sonata in Eb Major Op. 120
Finzi: Five Bagathelles
Messager: Solo de Concours
Poulenc: Sonata
Giampieri: Carnival of Venice

Any ideas would be excellent.
Many Thanks
Rob Bell

Bozza, "FANTASIE ITALIANNE." (spelling--????) I performed this on one of my college recitals & have always remembered how much fun it was. Check it out and Good Clarineting!!!!!!

William's suggestion is a good one.

Another idea:

Thinking back on those college recital days (and afterwards) one piece which comes to mind, that I've enjoyed playing is the Jeanjean "Clair Matin".

This is one of the lesser played of Jeanjean's late period (1920's) "café miniatures".

It will take minimum rehearsal time (as you only have 5 days to go)for you and the pianist, but it is thoroughly enjoyable for the audience as well as the performers...GBK

Try the Rabaud Solo de Concours. This piece lays well for the clarinet and the piano part does not appear to be too difficult.

What do you all think to the idea of playing the First Schumann Fantasy Piece with the Malcolm Arnold Sonatina (1st Mov)?

All comments appreciated
Thanks

What does your teacher think you should play?

I think the Schumann would go well with the Arnold - as they are both completely different in style and charcter, though you would have to change clarinets mid-way through. Your teachers opinion is always helpful, as is your own. Look at what you can play, see if it fits the time limit, and if it goes with the Arnold (Which most pieces do) then it's sorted. Other suggestions - Saint-seans Sonata, Mozart Quintet arr. piano + A Clarinet - Hindemith Sonata (tricky) - Spohr or any Weber piece to show off technique. But, it is what you can play that counts.
Happy Smiles.
DLE.

Try a Finzi Bagatelle or a bit of the Templeton Pocket Size sonata.
