Hi!

I went to CYM last summer, and am attending Crane School next year. I had a great time, met a lot of new people and learned a lot.

Mr. Wangler and Dr. Woy are both amazing people, rich with information - both wonderful teachers.

There are 3 bands - symphonic, concert and the orchestra.

A typical day is :

Breakfast
Masterclass
Rehersal
Like Ensemble

Lunch

Camp Choir
Rehersal
Theory or Jazz Improv.

That's your day of classes - after that - Free time, dinner, and a concert.

Placement for orchestra was hard - but that's just my opinion.

My only advice for auditions is- know your stuff, Auditions are just a solo piece ( I played Mozarts Concerto) and basic sightreading.

Overall, it was a great expirence. I met some really great friends, and just it made me a better musician. It was a challenge and really made me a better player. The only problem with camp... wake up call is at 6:30.

E-mail me if you have any questions !

I went there two years ago. The location and the food are the main drawbacks. I found the schedule to be very constrictive and regimented (you can walk around campus without a counselor) and the sign ins at every meal were a bit much. However, it was a valuable time for a "band camp" and it motivated me a lot. Only the two top clarinetists get in the orchestra, all the rest are in the clarinet ensemble. There aren't many choices- if you like what they have, you'll probably like it but if you don't you're stuck. If you're a really top player I'm not sure how much you'll get out of it but for the developing type it's great to be around people who know what there doing without a lot of pressure (I found my first year much better than my second). In short, it's a nice atmosphere but fairly limited.

As for playing level, I played the Weber Concerto No. 1 sort of decently after my freshman year in high school and was in the Wind Ensemble. After eighth grade, I played an easy Baroque sonata and was in the middle of the middle group. For auditions, prepare for sight reading. There's very little pressure.

Now SUNY Potsdam is trying to recruit me. I like Dr. Woy too but I'd never go to a college that's as isolated as Potsdam.

Hey--Potsdam's not that bad! Canada's close!! I have to plug for Potsdam because that's my home town. Born and raised in the arctic, as some say. It's a great school---Dr. Woy is a lot of fun..I took lessons with him for two years in HS. I went to CYM for two summers, but it was 7 or 8 years ago so I really don't remember anything about it at all. THe camp that I went to and really enjoyed a lot was NEMC in Maine. Great--four weeks a session and beautiful surroundings!

Anyway,
that's all,
Julia
