What changes happen if you chop off the butt-end of a reed? How much can you chop? Reason for question, I have a Jazz Mpc Dave S... included with my bass and my regular reeds fit flush against the neck collar and then extent about 1/4 above the lip. So, I need to hack off about 1/4 inch and can't find anything permitting or preventing this. Co0mments?

I've chopped the end off White Master reeds to fit the E flat and tenor sax reeds to fit the bass cl. (worth a try) and never noticed any ill effects.

On soprano clarinet, for example, Mitchell Lurie reeds are quite short and seem to play just fine nonetheless. I'm currently playing on some old Charles Chedeville bass clarinet reeds that are a good 1/4" shorter than most other brands, but are terrific reeds anyway. So my answer would be, 'doesn't matter'.
And like many other folks, I've chopped off many a Bb soprano clarinet reed to use on the little 'eefer'.

You can chop off the butt end of a reed until there's almost nothing left for the ligature to hold and still play fine. Don't worry about it.
In fact, you can often revive a dying reed for a while by cutting off the last 1/4 inch or so of the butt, or simply by shaving off the last 1/4 inch of the bottom with a knife.
