It would be my first guess, ETCH, that long term exposure to extreme heat would be unkind to a mouthpiece; Like, forgetting you left it on a radiator to let it warm up.
Perhaps something heavy pressing on it over time could cause some distortion... stored uncapped in a box of other stuff in a closet for a long time?
Then possibly, but maybe not unheard of, exposure to some kind of chemical action could spoil a mouthpiece. Leaving it on a bench in auto shop class....
Mouthpieces generally, even the not-so-good ones, are pretty sturdy. It takes something like a sudden blow to break one, other things mentioned above might distort one. Ordinarily, the usual nicks and scratches, even ugly ones, don't make them unuseable.
