Just thought I'd share: after owning the Sydney Symphony's recording of Éclairs sur l'Au-Delà (Illuminations from the beyond) and often listened to the CD - I'd never paid too much attention, other than to affirm my own opinion that his harmonic language is just beautiful and terribly odd. I read the sleeve notes last night and the word "contrabass clarinet" caught my eye - so I listened to the particular track and decided that it is the most unusual and fantastic way of handling an otherwise combersome but loveable instrument.
I recommend you grab a recording of the work and listen to it - thrilling and spooky. It's from movement 8 "les étoiles et la Glorie" (the stars and the Glory).
Now - I'd really like someone to tell me of other contemporary and relatively "available" recordings including this fascinating and much neglected beast.
thanks - diz
