Hi everyone,
First, I'll introduce myself. I'm 20, my name's Margaret and I've been playing the clarinet for eight years
***************************
I realize that you probably are bored with people wondering how old their instruments are, but I have diligently tried to find out on my own.
I have a wooden Normandy clarinet that I've been playing for four years. I bought it second hand from an instrument repair place that didn't know it's history, and I've always been curious about it.
The only markings on it are a Normandy stamp and Made in France. Other than that there's just the *serial number*, which is 7668.
From this, could anyone tell me the year (or range of years) that it would have been made in?
I'm also very curious as to the kind of wood it's made out of. I've seen grenadilla and it doesn't look like this. It is a very deep brown, but when you look at it in the light, it has burgundy red streaks in it. It's solid wood, if that helps.
Also, what woods have clarinets, in general, ever been made in?
*******************************************
I'm also interested in buying an E- flat sopranino clarinet. I played this in high school, but couldn't afford one. Now, I can. I would like to know how much to expect to pay *used* for:
-Plastic
-Wood, but by a regular manufacturer
-Wood, by Buffet
I nearly found one in my town, but it had the Albert system :( and I can't play with that key system.
Also, where would I look to find such an instrument? I haven't had much luck.
Thank you very much,
MargaretC

Margaret, I'd start by looking in the Sneezy "Classified" section which lists used, and reconditioned instruments for sale. If nothing there I would put in a "wanted" ad listing just what you desires are. Several of the Sneezy folk have stuff hidden away they may be willing to part with, or fix up for you.

Margaret - I have been hoping that someone might be able to help. I have only one older Normandy, a plastic, plateau system, beginning-student model, serial 38,xxx. I believe it dates back to the '40-50's , it plays only mediocre, I prob. havent spent enough time working it up. I have repaired several Norm's, another plateau and some old woods, but havent found ser # lists for the lesser models of the LeBlanc line, only some sales brochures which are of little help. There is a LeB phone #, back in the archives, perhaps in the "How Old Is My" section. I have seen several old Noblets, which were quite good for their time period. Don

I do have a Noblet Eb wood clar, very good IMHO as to tuning, but I find it hard to play Eb's at all well, liking bass much better. Don
