 Sam,

I just wanted to make sure that you received my answer to your Andrew Firth query, Your question was posted some time ago so this is just a reminder to check my reply. As I say, Andrew Firth is very good, but in my opinion, Karl Hird is even [much] better.

 Stuart,

I'm not sure I know what you mean by 'traditional jazz played by contemporary musicians'. Perhaps you mean dixieland jazz played by modernists? I don't think Firth or Hird fit in to this category, however, I will confine my remarks to Karl Hird as I have not heard much of Andrew Firth.

Karl Hird comes from a background of strictly New Orleans jazz as it was played in the era of the revival [ circa 1940s]. Since then Karl has widened and varied his style and repetoire considerably and in the last 20 years has become [in my opinion and that of a number of my colleagues]second to none in Australia and is a match for anyone else worldwide. Wow - that's a sweeping statement but he is good no doubt about it.

Karl also plays tenor sax and gigs around with blues and swing bands on the instrument and has a regular trio in which he plays all types of beautiful ballads. He even has a group which plays mainly tangos, I have not heard this one yet but I understand that it is quite good. It's his clarinet playing, though, that appeals to me the most - fluidity, tone, attack, phrasing - he's got it all.

Firth and Hird both started out young and both have much experience and both are still relatively young 30+ and under.

As I said in a reply to 'Sam' you will have difficulty in obtaining recorded material, but I have posted the contact details of a CD supplier here in Australia if you are interested.

Good luck.
