Check this out on e-Bay.
**MUST SEE** Rare Cor de Linton Bb Clarinet Item # 1508365882.
Some time back (1999???) someone asked for one of these (check archives).
What I would like to know, being uninformed, is:
1. Have any of our members played one of these?
2. What is/was the idea behind the Bell?
3. How do they sound compared to a "regular" Bb?
Just Curious, not buying!

Bob -
It's a Bb clarinet in alto clarinet form. I played one years ago in Charlie Ponte's Music Shop, and it was dreadful.
Best regards.

Ken,
Could you explain "dreadful" a little more...or more specifically?
By the way the person in the archives who asked about one of these is how a *very* happy owner of one (there was one other besides the one on eBay). Perhaps he would be a good person to contact should anyone want to know more.
True, they are not Buffet R13s. Certainly they wouldn't be for everyone. But I think they have their place.
Regards~

Beth -
Charlie Ponte had one mounted on the wall of his store, hanging on a hook. He had put new pads on it, so it covered pretty well. I asked him about it, and he took it down and let me play it. I thought the tone and response were poor, and the intonation was way out. Also, the bend in the neck meant the body was straight up and down, and I had trouble getting comfortable holding it. It was noticeably heavier than a regular clarinet and would need a neck strap.
It's entirely possible that the one I tried was a dog and that there are good ones, too. Certainly it was a conversation piece, and I'm glad I tried it, but I didn't like it much. YMMV.
Best regards.
