Just wanted to say thanks to y'all who gave me input in selecting a new mpc for the bass I play. I have to mail order and your advice helped narrow down the choices I needed to try on approval. I finally went with the Selmer C*. The projection is great (I'm stuck in the back playing with the horns and basses) and I can, for the first time, get smoothly over the break, both ways, and reach those nasty higher notes. Amazing what a change in mpc makes and it certainly got a workout at rehearsal last night! I also changed my reed over to Hemke tenor sax reeds - strange I know - but the combination works well for me. Now my head vibrates playing the low notes on fff, cool.....

Have you ever tried playing low notes on the bass clarinet while watching a T.V. screen? I get a wonderful psychedelic effect.

Jez, if you are interested there wass a long thread on this about six months ago. Do a search on it and you will find a logical(?) rationale for it.

I find it essential to use double lip on bass (and contra). I'd rather have my brains unscrambled, no matter how I like my eggs. If you're using enough air (i.e., lots and lots), you don't need much embouchure pressure to play bass.

I use double lip on every reed instrument I play, always have and always will (tried single lip about a year ago and hated it - had no control) and I do use a "looser embouchure" playing the bass otherwise my jaw winds up aching and I'm drooling by the end of rehearsal. I'm playing "harder" in rehearsal because I'm sitting back with the lower brasses - I admit it - I've become a lazy counter (translation, years of not practicing on a regular basis) and the guys back there and I play alot of the same rhythms. But in performances I sit where I should and play less forcefully.

When I hum the lowest note I can and look at the computer screen, I see the screen shimmer and wave. I'll bet a bass clarinet would look REALLY cool!
