Mindy --

Congratulations on your clarinet and web site creation accomplishments.

Obviously the sneezy "god" (as some BB frequenters have referred to him recently) will make the final decision, but personally I don't see this as the type of self-promotion that M**K (are we allowed to write his name?) is concerned about, particularly as you're not selling anything on your site. It's more like those posts where people tell us they won first chair in such and such competition, or those that invite anyone in their area to a recital they will be giving. Just announcements and spreading the good news about clarineting to all.

Congratulations, again.

I hate getting people mad at me and everyone but I do agree with you. I mean it isn't like anyone will want us.....all we are doing making us feel good about ourselves playing together. We have always wanted a website. Like you said we aren't really "selling" anything.......if we ever do concerts in our area so far we have been doing them for free or food...etc. but we are trying to start getting paid. BUT I'm not selling us on here because why would any of y'all want a bunch of students play for you. Anyways we are in Florida and there probably not many from Florida here, so right now we are not going to fly around just to get some gigs.

Again I don't want to start anything up on here. But all I was wanting was have y'all see it because I was excited about it. That is all

thanks

Mindy

Todd W. ...Sorry, I strongly disagree. Self promotion is self promotion.

The site mentioned by Mindy (yes - I did look at it - Nice job Mindy) is clearly for people to get information about her organization as well as for possible bookings.

I play in a big band that does many bookings and engagements in our area. Mark would not want my organization's web site (or anyone else's) on this portion of the bulletin board. This would turn it into a free advertising space.

If one wants additional info on someone's performing group, they can contact that individual off line..

There is a retail section on this site for those that need to advertise (and at the same time), support this web site...GBK

GBK --

Your point is well taken, but I still see a difference between a site such as Mindy's, that is put up by middle school students and that (for me at least) is more informational than anything else, and the type you refer to that is done by a professional (or part-time professional) group soliciting bookings. Again, our webmaster will decide whether to make a flat rule or look at each posting on a case by case basis. I'm sure he'll make his usual fair decision.

However, you do bring up an interesting point. There must be quite a number of BB regulars who, like you, belong to a professional (or part-tme professional) band/orchestra which has a web site promoting themselves. Again, I see a difference between such groups, that are looking for regional bookings, and those people (on the sneezy sponsor page) who sell products virtually worldwide over the Internet. I would like to know about such groups just to see (and hear in some cases) their web pages, and perhaps go to performances if they happen to be in my area, or if I'm traveling in their area. I'll bet there would be many others who feel as I do.

Where am I going with this? Mark, do you think it would be worth your time/profitable to have a Musical Groups Sponsor Page with links to the groups' web pages? Instead of paying $50.00 per year (very reasonable if you're selling products worldwide), a group could pay a one-time fee of, say $20.00, to put the link to their web site on the Musical Groups Sponsor Page.

Mindy --

One change you might want to make to your web site so you don't get a bunch of weird responses: If I BARE with you, we'll all be naked. If I BEAR with you (even though it sounds grizzly), we'll all be patient. (Think of bearing up under a strain, like struggling to complete your web site.)

Delightful !
Personally, Mindy, I find in your website a great show of enthusiasm for the art, both music and webpage design, and I like your repertoire. When you become widely known you can hire a promoter and pay for a sponsorship at Sneezy. In the meantime... I for one hope Southern Winds gets lots of exposure playing some, what looks to be, really nice sounds. We all have to start somewhere, so, why not try it (the webpage) out on your friends first? Wish I were visiting Florida this year - I'd look you guys up :)
And, it wouldn't bother my conscience one iota that I learned about you from the Sneezy BB either.
Thanks for sharing :]

Congratulations! This is an informative website, and, Mindy, you are not really promoting yourself as much as telling yourself about us. You are not yet a professional trying to sell yourself or your product. I think that you are just very proud of your new website, and you should be! I was delighted to read about you, and keep up the good work! All of us should encourage students who post here...

Quite frankly, Mindy, when you offer performances where "rates depend on duration", and offer pro bono charity performances, you are in business. Chuck

Please, folk, let me be the "bad guy" if necessary and do the policing. I have a warm spot in my heart for a few young folk who are getting together to make music and just might let the posting slide ,,,

I'd have used folk adjectivally but not as a plural noun. What dictionary are you using Mark? Hope this doesn't impinge on the spelling commandment. It's simply a request for information.

The word folk can be used as an adjective or a noun. As a noun, it refers to people or a group of people, as in "old folk". It may be used as Mark did, "folk", or with its plural form "folks". As an adjective, it describes a characteristic of people or things from a particular region or country, as in "folk music".

Hey Mindy!

Great site. ;)
I play in a Wind Quintet too - and they comprise of some of my best friends. Frankly, it was because we came together (brought together by a mutual friend but not with each other) and through months of rehearsing for our first performance (Poulenc's Sextet for winds and piano) that led to the friendship we enjoy and appreciate today.

It's difficult playing in a Wind Quintet but what's surprisingly nice (in our case) for us was the effect it had on us in tems of bringing us together. The relationship helped us in understanding each other 's playing and reading each other's body movements, expresion etc. That's one wonder of Chamber Music, I guess.
We weren't note perfect but people were coming up to tell us they could feel a team effort in the music!

Have fun!

ps: By the way, we always called ourselves a Wind Quintet instead of 'Woodwind Quintet' because our Hornist gets a little miffed!
