This thread goes on a bazillion times. If you check down about 20 pages or so you can see a thread identical to this. I'd rather not do this one every month or two.

Every year or two, maybe ...

I own a Buffet clarinet but it's only a back-up (if the other's being serviced or I've got a gig somewhere I don't want to take a v. expensive one) for my Leblanc Symphonie VII which is the best!!!!! Rosewood Rocks!!!!!!!!! I also have a Leblanc Vito alto clarinet.

I also have a Buffet R-13 Greenline and a Leblanc Symphonie VII. Love them both equally. Buffet isn't the only great clarinet on the planet. The Symphonie VII (as Kate mentioned) ROCKS!

LeBlanc Concertos and Buffet R-13s for 99% of my professional playing. All of my saxophones are Selmers, however. I drive an Izusu with a Honda for back-up, and I agree with Mark--once a year on this "What do you play?" thread, while interesting, is sufficient. Good Clarineting in 2002.

Patricola rosewood Eb, Bb, C, Leblanc Infinite A (also have a Patricola A, but I usually use the Leblanc), Selmer Paris alto, Buffet 1190 bass, and, now, Merry Christmas from Grammy...a Selmer rosewood contralto :) Always on the try for new horns, though....I'm green with envy over Brenda's new Symphonie VII :)

Kate's right...rosewood rocks :) (my oboe and EH are both rosewood, too...I think I may have an addiction. Is there a Rosewood Addicts Anonymous?) :)

Happy clarinetting in the new year!

I have the 333rd Selmer 10G ever made, hand picked by Gigliotti (he went through the first 500 himself and this was one he brought back), it's a class horn. It was the only non-Buffet I tried all dem years ago, out of about 25-30 horns, It won. Never regretted it for a moment. My teacher was thrilled; my band director was mad. LOL

I hate is the "band director's argument" - everyone should have Buffets so the section sounds nice and dark, and everyone sounds the same. Why the heck do I want to sound like anyone else? ;)

Cheers and Happy New Year!
Lynn

I've never owned a buffet, actually...started on yamaha plastic, moved onto a selmer intermediate, now play a leblanc concerto. The leblanc feels a lot more comfortable to me than the buffets i tried and i find the sound a lot more flexible for me.

Well, since Mark doesn't want this going on every few months, I have a suggestion.. Why not add a new part to Sneezy? A set-up scene so everyone can post once and maybe make edits to their set-up.. That way.. Unless it somehow gets deleted.. You don't have to go through it even every year. Just a thought, maybe it would be more trouble than it's worth?

By the way.. I play a Buffet R-13

Mike

More trouble than it's worth - since I personally think these threads are worthless. I can figure out more accurate proportionalities of instruments by looking at the manufacturer's annual reports - and the annual reports are a lot more interesting ... to me, anyway. I'm a spoilsport anyway ;^)

Mark - My guess is that we-all just love to talk [and brag a bit] about an important segment of our busy lives!! I have more good Selmers than Leblancs at this stage of collecting, but have a number of lesser-regarded modern cls and saxes, and some 10 related WW's of antique character. 'Nuff said?? Don

I don't think these threads are necessarily worthless...I mean, knowing percentages of who owns the same clarinet as you is one thing, but it is interesting to me to hear the experiences of actual people who have played the instrument. If I have a problem or a question I now have a list of people to go to.

If you're just curious as to overall statistics, than obviously reports would be a better source, as Mark has said.

Definitely agree though that this thread does not need to be done more than once...i only posted here because I am fairly new to this board.

exactly...not all of us have been around for ages. There are brand new people who are really into clarinets and equipment and really get off on just knowing what other people play. I'm the same way...that's almost always my first question when I meet another musician..."What do you play on?" Not because I think one should be judged by it, but just because I think it's interesting to know what other people play. I guess, in the simplest terms possible...if the topic bugs you, or you're not interested, or you don't want to participate...don't read it and don't post. :) That way, everyone's happy! :) (and it's all about being happy, right?)

Josh, as the person in charge of the BBoard, I have the responsibility to read every post, whether I think they're worthwhile or not. Also, as the person behind the scenes, I have the right to guide this BBoard in ways that I see fit. I would rather never see this thread again, but perhaps I'll just limit it to once a quarter. Next thread on "what you play" will be allowed on April 1 ... and we know we all know what day that is ...

Put this question in perspective. After a performance, it is TACKY to ask, "what mouthpiece did you use?" or "nice ligature, baby." On a website, it is IMPOSSIBLE to say wonderful things like "beautifully expressed" or "that was so delicate I wanted to cry." Hardware questions work really well on-line. Save them for here. Say emotional things in person.

So, this is what I remember right now:

Buffet (3 B flat, 2 A)
Leblanc (B flat, A, Bass, Contra-Alto)
Jean Cartier (Bass)
Conn (1948 wood B flat - almost perfect)
Stephen Fox (C)
And others.

Sorry, but in this instance I agree with Mark.

I don't really care what anyone else plays, except perhaps, I may have a passing interest in what a major player uses, and then usually only if the information happens to be right there in front of me. I won't usually go hunting for it.

If I want to know anything about a specific instrument, besides its age and quality, I ask a specific person who uses it and if it still interests me, I go find one and try it out.

That being said, I own a bunch of all different makes and models, from student to professional horns, and play most of them regularly.

Buffets don't particularly attract me, but I don't dislike them. Leblancs particularly attract me, but they are not so unique as to make them all I'll play. I like Selmers just as well. And let's not forget the B&H Imperials, probably my actual favorites. There are several other brands in our "collection."

I don't own any Yamahas, and don't think I want to, so far. I haven't tried one I've liked yet.

If I tell you I play a 1954 Imperial and it's wonderful, how does that information help you? Can you just go out and buy one just like it? Can you go to a music store and try one just like that? I don't think so.

On the other hand, if you play the clarinet, 30 different people shouldn't need to tell you they play a Buffet R-13 and love it for you to know Buffet clarinets are excellent. Even as a beginner you can ask these questions of your teacher(s) and do your own thing from there.

I don't know if that's right, but it's my opinion, and many of us know what opinions are like...
