 Small Mozartian Question
Author: Micaela
Date:   2001-12-27 01:22

I suppose this is more of a technique question, but it relates to Mozart Concerto. After the long string of thirds on the fourth page of the first movement, there is a series of D-C#-D-C#s. What should I do with my E flat key here? I've been leaving it down (that is to say my finger is not on it) and to my ears the D sounds just fine- they are sixteenth notes. I have tried to move the Eb key with the notes, but I can't do it cleanly. Should I shut up and practice it or is it not a big enough issue to worry about?

Or does this just show that I've been playing the Mozart for a very long time and this kind of thing is keeping me up at night?

Thanks,
Micaela

I don't use the Eb key because it will make the C#'s dreadfully sharp. You're doing the right thing by leaving it down. As far as eveness goes the thing that helps me is to "pull" the 2nd sixteenth note of each grouping that is the "e" of 1 and the "e" of 2. Also taking it slow to ensure evenness helps.

Keil is correct...No Eb key on the D-C#-D-C# for obvious intonation reasons...

By the way, are you using the 1 and 2 fingering on the following B-A#-B-A# pattern? ...GBK

I agree--no "Eb" key for the C#. For the following A#s, I use the regular chromatic fingering (T-R, l-h 1, 2, and 3 "banana" key) keeping all the action in the left hand.

BTW, to play the high G just before the thirds, use either the T-R, 1 0 3 / 1 2 0 Eb or just T-R, 1 0 0 / 0 0 0 Eb (over blown natural B)

The only place I use the "1 and 1" Bb fingering is two measures before #8 of the third movt., and then, sometimes not opting for the side key Bb instead. Usually I try to avoid the 1 & 1 fingering whenever possible as the sound is bad and its usually way out of tune..Other than for those reasons, its ok.

Good Clarineting "above the border"

Thanks for your help!

I'm not using 1 & 1 at all in Mozart because it doesn't speak very well on my A clarinet (I use it a lot on my B flat, though). I usually use the side A#, not the "sliver key."
