Is it possible to tell the modal of an instrument by its serial number? For example, if a Yamaha grenadilla wood clarinet has the serial number 004910A11, would it be possible to know which model it is i.e intermediate/professional?

Yes. This BBS has several manufacturer's serial number listings for decades upon decades of production. Try the database to see if your horn is somewhere on the list.

Look before you leap. The serial number lists on this BBS do not include Yamaha. The best bet is to call the manufacturer or US distributor. Serial numbers often give no clue to the make and model, depending on how the the manufacturer codes it. If you know manufacturer, model, and serial number, then you have a chance of finding out when it was made. If you are missing any one of these three pieces of information, then it becomes difficult (and in many cases impossible) to learn anything further about the instrument.
