 All-state

Does anyone in california know how hard it is to place in all-state? I sent in my tape and thought I did fairly well, but I messed up on the first scale a little (not major, just uneven lifting of fingers) Will that mistake totally ruin my chances of making it? Thanks

To be brutally honest, in a large state such as California with probably hundreds of applicants for clarinet and using a tape for entry, technical slipups can really hurt your chances. Since you can take and re-take the scale when you submit a tape, the chances for technical perfection should be near 100%. It would be akin to sending an essay into Harvard for the entrance requirements with misspelled words. Even if the essay were good the misspelled words would hurt your chances, especially since spell checkers are so common.

Coming from someone in California... this is my first year sending in a tape for all-state, but from what I've heard (from people who have made all-state, haven't made all-state but auditioned, and people who listened to tapes and auditioned people) it's rather difficult. And as much as it is dependent upon your personal talent, it is also largely dependent upon the talent of everyone else who auditioned... one year there was a mallet player at my school who made all-state, then the next year they played their scales literally twice as fast and didn't make it... they are though, as Mark pointed out, rather brutal about technical errors because it is a taped audition.

Good luck Cindy; maybe we'll both get lucky and I'll see you there :-)

I was in it my sophmore and junior years ('99 and '00) and it is difficult to get into all-state in Cali. and your tape does need to be basically flawless especially since you can take and re-take each scale and solo passage as many times as you want. However, I don't think a little uneveness will totally ruin your chances at getting in. There are a lot of other factors that come into play besides your level of talent. I found that the level of talent mattered more when it came to seating auditions once you are actually in all-state. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I hope that you both make it in! =)
