Instead of having the pad and opening on the backside of the clarinet in line with the thumb hole, the register key wraps around to the top side of the clarinet and opens just above the A key--thus "wrap-around" register key--some misinformed people still refer to this key as the "octave" key which is incorrect. The interval affect of using this key is a twelfth--not an octave--and actually puts the clarinet in a different register (or harmonic series) rather than simply jumping the octave, as with a saxophone for example. For some reason I have never quite grasped, it has also been called a "speaker" key. But *not* an octave key.

It enables the middle and higher registers to "speak." Although it is possible to play these registers without this key, it is very difficult.
